IELTS Academic Writing correction
IELTS Academic Writing tests two very different skills: describing visual data in Task 1 and building an argument in Task 2. A qualified teacher corrects both against the four official criteria, estimates your band, and rewrites the sentences that are limiting your score.
In short
- Academic Task 1 = describe a chart, graph, table, map or process in 150+ words.
- Academic Task 2 = a 250+ word essay, weighted twice as heavily as Task 1.
- A teacher marks both against the four criteria and returns a band estimate in 48 hours.
The two pieces of IELTS Academic Writing
| Task 1 | Task 2 | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | Describe visual data (chart, graph, map, process) | Write an argumentative essay |
| Minimum words | 150 | 250 |
| Suggested time | 20 minutes | 40 minutes |
| Weighting | One third of the writing band | Two thirds of the writing band |
| Task 1 criterion | Task Achievement | Task Response |
Task 1: the skill most candidates underrate
Academic Task 1 is not a free description — examiners reward selecting and grouping the key features and writing a clear overview. A missing or weak overview caps Task Achievement, no matter how good the rest is.
Task 2: where the band is decided
Because Task 2 is worth twice as much as Task 1, the essay usually sets your writing band. We check that you answer the full question, develop your ideas, and use the range of vocabulary and grammar that band 7+ requires.

IELTS Academic — common questions
What is the difference between Academic and General Training writing?+
Academic Task 1 is a data or process description; General Training Task 1 is a letter. Task 2 is an essay in both modules. We correct both, but Academic candidates need the data-description skills of Task 1.
Do you mark against the official IELTS criteria?+
Yes — Task Response (Task Achievement on Task 1), Coherence & Cohesion, Lexical Resource, and Grammatical Range & Accuracy. You get a band estimate for each.
Should I submit Task 1 and Task 2 together?+
It helps. A full exam pair shows your whole Academic writing profile and lets us see how you manage time and energy across both tasks.
How long does a correction take?+
A single task is returned within 48 hours (Friday to Tuesday).
