How to practise with it
Time yourself
Allow about 20 minutes for Task 1 and 40 for Task 2. Read the Task 2 guide first, since it carries twice the weight of Task 1 in your Writing band.
Plan before you write
For Task 1, decide your overview and key features before drafting. Check the Task 1 guide for the structure examiners expect in each visual or letter type.
Get it marked
Once you have written an answer, send it to a human teacher through our IELTS writing correction service for feedback against all four criteria and your target band.
IELTS Question Generator — common questions
What does the IELTS Question Generator do?+
Pick your module, the task you want to practise, and a topic. The tool writes a realistic exam-style prompt: an Academic Task 1 visual description or a General Training letter scenario with three bullets, and a Task 2 essay question. You then write your own answer.
Is this the same as a real IELTS question?+
It is written in the style of a real IELTS Writing paper for practice, but it is not an official IDP, British Council, or Cambridge question. Use it to rehearse the task format and timing before test day.
What is the difference between Academic and General Training Task 1?+
Academic Task 1 asks you to describe a chart, graph, table, map, or process in at least 150 words. General Training Task 1 asks you to write a letter with three required points. Both modules share the same style of Task 2 essay.
Does the tool mark my answer or give a band?+
No. It only generates practice questions. To get your writing scored against the four criteria, submit it to our human teachers through the IELTS writing correction service.
