IELTS Writing Checklist

Run your Task 1 or Task 2 answer through a structured self-check before you submit it. Each item is mapped to one of the four official IELTS Writing criteria, so you can spot gaps in structure, word count, register and accuracy while you still have time to fix them.

How to use it well

Start with the task type

Switch between the Task 1 and Task 2 lists. For Academic data description and General Training letters, work through the Task 1 guide so your overview and word count are right.

Give the essay extra care

Task 2 carries twice the weight of Task 1. Check your position and paragraph structure against the Task 2 guide and the band descriptors.

A checklist catches the obvious gaps. For feedback on all four criteria from a qualified teacher, use our IELTS writing correction service.

IELTS Writing Checklist — common questions

What does the IELTS Writing Checklist cover?+

It gives separate checklists for Task 1 and Task 2, each mapped to the four official criteria: Task Achievement or Task Response, Coherence and Cohesion, Lexical Resource, and Grammatical Range and Accuracy. Tick items as you self-review before submitting.

Does the checklist work for both Academic and General Training?+

Yes. The Task 1 list includes Academic data description (chart, graph, map, process) and General Training letters, including register choice. The Task 2 essay list applies to both modules, since Task 2 is the same essay format in each.

What word counts should I aim for?+

Task 1 needs at least 150 words and Task 2 at least 250 words. Writing under the minimum loses marks under Task Achievement or Task Response, so the checklist prompts you to confirm length before you finish.

Does ticking everything guarantee a high band?+

No. This is a free self-check, not an official score. Task 2 carries twice the weight of Task 1 in your Writing band, and band scoring weighs all four criteria together. A human teacher gives the most reliable view of your level.
