IELTS Band Score Estimator

Rate your own writing on each of the four IELTS criteria, from 4 up to 9 in half-band steps, and we average them into an estimated overall Writing band. Use it as a quick self-check on where you stand before you submit your work for a full correction.

How to use it well

Rate against the descriptors

Read the official band wording first so each rating is honest. Our IELTS writing band scores guide explains what each band 4 to 9 actually means.

Weigh the two tasks

Task 2 counts twice as much as Task 1 in the real exam. Plan a stronger essay with the Task 2 guide, then check your Task 1 answer too.

Confirm with a teacher

A self-estimate is only as honest as your own marking. For a calibrated band on all four criteria, use our IELTS writing correction service.

IELTS Band Score Estimator — common questions

How does the IELTS Band Score Estimator work?+

You self-rate each of the four Writing criteria from 4 to 9 in half-band steps. The tool averages your four ratings and rounds to the nearest 0.5 to give an estimated overall Writing band.

Which four criteria does it use?+

Task Response, Coherence and Cohesion, Lexical Resource, and Grammatical Range and Accuracy. On Task 1 the first criterion is Task Achievement. Each is scored from 0 to 9, exactly as an examiner marks.

Is this my real IELTS band?+

No. It is a self-estimate based on how you rate your own writing, so it reflects your judgement, not an examiner's. A real band comes from trained marking of your actual Task 1 and Task 2 answers.

Does Task 1 or Task 2 count more?+

In the official exam, Task 2 is weighted twice as heavily as Task 1 in the overall Writing band. This estimator treats the four criteria equally as a quick guide, so judge a real essay on both tasks.
